Martial Arts

Take a Look Parents!

I have been studying martial arts for the last many years and have come to realize that parents often seek out martial arts training for their children for many of the same reasons they place their children in play therapy: to strengthen discipline, self-control, and respect for others as well as boost confidence, self-esteem and respect for self.

Many families find that this is a great way to connect as a family: sharing time together several times a week, celebrating successes, being active and meeting friends.

Great for Adults Too!

The martial arts are a great opportunity to meet new people and get some exercise, but it can be so much more than that:

Depending on how you engage it, the martial arts can be an amazing experience of self growth and empowerment, a practice of learning about your body, getting into your body, and trusting your body. A practice in vulnerability, playfulness and “getting comfortable in the uncomfortable” as my instructor says.

It can be about exploring and maintaining boundaries, learning how to take care of yourself and how to ask others to take care of you too, as well as finding the balance between respecting your limits by not pushing too hard and then sometimes trusting yourself to train harder than you normally would, maybe more than you thought you could

It’s a unique experience for each of us. If you’re interested, give it a shot!

There are many training centers, dojos, and kwoons in the area.

Each training center, instructor and style of martial art has a little different feel. I encourage you to find the one that fits you and your needs best. Most centers are happy to offer an opportunity to try them out for a lesser cost or for free.
